Exploring the Medium of Paint

A photograph can do its job well and often there is no need to further exploit its meaning.  It captures its subject matter immediately and in a straightforward manner.  In using photographs as references for these paintings, I am not concerned with accurately mimicking them, rather, I hope to extract something else that can only be expressed through the medium of paint.  In each painting I pick an appealing element of its parent photograph and redefine its meaning in the form of line and color.  I focus only on the part of the painting that needs to be worked, leaving areas of the original drawing and underpainting exposed.
